What should be measured first?
Ask the estimator to record:
- visible water and likely entry points;
- relative humidity and where it was measured;
- the drainage path and outlet;
- crawl-space floor area;
- dehumidifier capacity and drain route; and
- power, upkeep and backup needs.
Where does drainage matting send water?
Matting under a liner can help water move. It still needs somewhere to go. A complete proposal should connect it to a defined drain or sump when one is needed.
The local outside path matters too. The Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District describes poor-draining clay soil in parts of Franklin County. It also notes hard subsoil on some newer lots outside Interstate 270. These facts support checking grade and downspouts before choosing an interior system.
What belongs in a sump quote?
- basin and pump model;
- rated capacity and lift conditions;
- check valve and sealed lid;
- discharge route and end point;
- battery backup or alarm;
- power needs; and
- upkeep and replacement terms.
What belongs in a dehumidifier quote?
- moisture-removal capacity;
- conditions used for the rating;
- target humidity setting;
- condensate drain route;
- filter and service schedule;
- energy and power needs; and
- equipment and labor coverage.
Ohio’s current residential-code rule includes dehumidification at 70 pints per day for each 1,000 square feet as one path for an unvented crawl space. That figure does not choose a product or replace an assessment.
When does insulation enter the plan?
Wet or fallen fiberglass can hide damage and block access. Removing it can also change the thermal design. Ask what stays, what comes out and where the new thermal boundary will be.
The City of Columbus lists residential basement waterproofing within its limited home-improvement contractor scope. Ask which current licence covers drainage or related work and verify it in the City’s live records.
Use the quote checklist to compare equipment. Use the cost guide to keep these items separate from the base liner price.
Frequently asked questions
Can a dehumidifier replace encapsulation?
It can remove water from air. It does not stop soil vapor, outside air or liquid water. The full plan should address the sources that are present.
Does every crawl space need a sump pump?
No. A sump needs a clear water-control purpose. Ask why it is proposed and where the water will discharge.
Who performs electrical work?
The quote should say. Pumps and dehumidifiers may need suitable outlets or circuits. A properly qualified party should do that work.
